Chord saw an astonishing level of success with the release of Hugo; their compact yet superlative-sounding DAC/headphone amplifier, which was designed for on-the-go use. Despite the key design factor being portability, the DAC chipset within the Hugo is said to rival many competitor models that are much larger in stature. We've had many customers purchase Hugos to replace the DAC in their static system, with essentially no intention to ever make use of the portability factor of the Hugo!

Exactly a year after the release of the initial Hugo, Chord Electronic unveiled at CES2015 a brand new alternative dubbed 'Hugo TT', which features the same meticulous construction process as the original Hugo, while seeing upgrades to the technology within and increasing the number of connections. A remote control is included with the Hugo TT, and an alphanumeric LED display has been integrated, along with an asynchronous USB-B digital input. It's also larger in structure, and has been designed to act as 'the desktop version of the Hugo'.

The Hugo TT is capable of supporting up to 32-bit/384kHz audio, using the coaxial and USB connections, while the optical port will allow for a 24-bit/192kHz D/A conversion. DSD64 is supported across all of the inputs, and DSD128 can be achieved when using the coaxial or the USB connections. Further features found on the Hugo TT over the original Hugo include the integration of two balanced XLR outputs, two 1/4" headphone outputs (an additional 3.5mm headphone jack is also present), and upgrades to the coaxial and digital inputs have been made. The larger chassis provides more room for this additional connections, as well as allowing for the integration of supercapacitors.

Chord use a custom-build Bluetooth module to allow even the most demanding audiophiles to stream directly to the Hugo TT with a lossless result, thanks to the A2DP aptX codec used by this Bluetooth receiving module.

The Hugo TT has been designed to run non-stop from the charger supplied in the box, but the engineers at Chord have improved the battery of the Hugo TT over the initial Hugo model. The device's battery uses Supercap energy storage, a battery technology seen commonly in F1 cars, where supercapacitors back up the batteries of the cars by sharing the load and charge demands, resulting in further protection.

"The original Hugo was not optimised for home use: a minority of audiophile cables with the largest RCA and USB terminations sometimes proved difficult to accommodate, and the shorter range of the Bluetooth pairing distance could sometimes cause problems in larger homes.

"The upgrades we've made would not have been possible within the existing Hugo's smaller dimensions, but fit comfortably within the larger Hugo TT." - John Franks (Chord Electronics founder)
