Musical Fidelity are a well-known name in British hifi, having developed a number of the most prestigiously regarded audio playback components on the market today and in the past. The Merlin system acts as an example of the company's design prowess and audio superiority, while also proving that they're not only willing, but excited to reflect modern trends while retaining their iconic industrial aesthetic.
The Merlin amplifier offers a comfortable 50 watts of power to each channel, utilising state of the art amplification technology that keeps Musical Fidelity at the top of its game. Integrated within this amplifier are a number of streaming capabilities, effectively removing the need for a further digital source component. The Merlin amp is compact in stature, bit large in spec; featuring dual 24bit/192kHz DAC chipsets, combined with twin high-grade amplification modules. These amplifiers run in unison with each other, while in isolated profiles to act as 'separate monoblocks'. The result is a superior reduction in unwanted noise or distortion.
The headphone section of the amplifier borrows most of its technology from the company's well-received dedicated audiophile V90-HPA headphone amplifier. This means that listening to music from the Merlin using high quality headphones is equally as impressive as listening through loudspeakers; the music simply sounds superb.
A number of inputs are available on the Merlin amplifier, including analogue phono, USB (isochronous for updating the system or connecting to a PC for playback) Bluetooth (audiophile-grade aptX codec) and a line-input (digital or analogue).
To complete the amplifier, an analogue to digital converter (ADC) has been built in to the unit, with a specially configurable output - analogue or digital, fixed or variable. This means that directly connecting the Merlin to a computer will allow the user to rip content to the hard drive from the source being played - this included vinyl LP records. It also allows for a subwoofer to be added to the system if one wishes to do so.
