Marantz PM6005 Integrated Amplifier

Marantz's PM6005 isn't simply an upgraded version of its multi-award winning predecessor, the PM6004 - it has an even more refined circuit design, featuring higher quality audiophile components, within a well screened enclosure to minimise distortion. With the Marantz PM6005, you now have the ability to connect this exceptional amplifier straight in to an array of different digital sources thanks to the new digital input board with optical and coaxial SPDIF inputs, and make use of it's remarkable on-board DAC, which creates an insanely detailed and exceptionally high level of audio enjoyment when used in conjunction with new media. The digital inputs and DAC are screened in a metal sub-enclosure, to completely contain any digital interference associated with this type of circuitry, therefore protecting the sensitive analogue signal path.

Set up of the PM6005 in a hi-fi system is very straightforward , just connect a signal source such as CD player to one of the four analogue inputs, a pair of loudspeakers to the speaker terminals and superb quality music will flow.

Marantz have of course retained the HDAM pre-amplifier and power amplifier aspects that exclusively contain discrete components, not a single IC in sight of the signal path. This is because uniquely designated single components not only outperform IC's in quality, but they also enable the ability to refine the sound in an entirely different level of detail, which results in a much better clarity and transparency. Use of IC's tends to cause left to right channel leakage, which gives a narrowed stereo image. Because the two channels are kept completely separate by the HDAM circuit design, the sound stage of the PM6005 is very wide, deep and natural.
The mains power supply features a lower noise, powerful shielded Toroidal transformer, and  unique Nichichon reservoir capacitors, glued to the pcb with the top foil removed minimising resonance. All of the original features like the 5-line audio input (including phono), two pairs of gold-plated speaker connections with the convenience of bi-wiring, and a remote handset, are still all included within the unit, but with the addition of  optical and coaxial digital inputs.

The DAC within the unit is the excellent sounding 24bit/192kHz high current CS4398, which has already proved itself in many other Premium products, and the complete digital section is completely shielded by an extra metal housing to make sure that the digital stage has absolutely no effect on the analogue signal. To sum up, the PM6005 has been described as 'an excellent bridge to the future of streamed music'.

The power amplifier stage is also constructed using discrete components, with an aluminium heatsink to dissipate unwanted heat in the output transistors, giving stable transistor temperatures for more reliability and lower thermal distortion of the audio signal. Current feedback is employed, so that unwanted return currents from the loudspeaker are compensated for in the preamplifier in advance, thereby leading to a cleaner audio output signal.
