Primal Scream - Screamadelica

Screamadelica is the third studio album by Primal Scream. It skyrocketed the band to commercial success, but musically it was a departure from their previous indie rock sound.

Released in September 1991, Screamadelica draws a lot of inspiration from the emerging house music scene of the time, and saw renowned DJs Andrew Weatherall and Terry Farley act as producers on the album. As well as house, there are strong Gospel and Dub influences evident at various times in the album.

All songs on the album were written by lead-singer Bobby Gillespie, Andrew Innes, and Robert Young; except "Slip Inside This House" which was originally a psychedelic rock track written in the 1960s by Roky Erickson and Tommy Hall of the 13th Floor Elevators.

Critically, the album continues to be an international hit. At the time of release it won the first Mercury Music Prize (in 1992), and now many publications rate it as one of the best albums of the 1990's.

The Cover Art

The album cover for Screamadelica was painted by Alan McGee's Creation Records' in-house artist, Paul Cannell. The artwork has gone down in history as one of the great British album covers and was chosen by the Royal Mail for a set of "Classic Album Cover" postage stamps, issued in January 2010.
