Project started in the hifi business designing and manufacturing affordable stereo turntables in the early 1990's, beginning with the entry level Debut model. It was a great success, as all other turntables on the market at that time were at least £100 more expensive, without offering a performance benefit. Project have gone on to extend the range of turntables they offer at all popular price points and performance levels, through midrange to high end models. Further product developments include a range of compact hifi separates, turntable supports, amplifiers, tuners, iPod docks and tonearms.
As a celebratory release, ProJect have combined traditional design with state of the art technology to form the ProJect Classic, an ode to 25 years of quality turntable construction. The 'frame' aesthetic is based around the visual design of early Thorens and Linn models, while the technology that the Classic's construction utilises is to the high standard of innovation and quality that ProJect have become renowned for.
Using a two-plinth configuration, the motor is able to sit in a separate plinth to the bearing and tonearm. This drastically reduces parasitic resonance and mechanical noise interfering with the delicate signal picked up by the cartridge. The plinth sections are built from medium-density fibre and are isolated from each other using Thermo Plastic Elastomers. Using TPE means that the Classic is simple to set-up but uncompromising on sound.
The tonearm is built using a combination of carbon and aluminium in a sandwich composition. The carbon fibre helps the arm retain minimal mass but optimal rigidity, while the aluminium helps to achieve superior damping overall. The tube is then supported by a newly developed bearing assembly, designed to offer ultra low friction with wider movement for better tracking.
The ProJect Classic comes with an Ortofon 2M Silver cartridge as standard.
