The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
The Queen is Dead is the third studio album from English alternative rock band, The Smiths. It was released in June 1986 to high critical acclaim and commercial success; since then it has continued to maintain relevance and popularity up to the modern day.
The songwriting for the album was done in various stages over 1985, principally by guitarist Johnny Marr and singer-songwriter Morrissey. The same pair also produced the album, predominantly working with engineer Stephen Street (Street had also engineered the band's previous album, Meat Is Murder).
The Queen is Dead is popularly regarded as The Smiths' best album, though Marr and Morrissey tend to disagree. It's a creative mix of British Invasion-style 'jangle pop', music hall, rockabilly and punk rock that promptly elevated the band to an influential level within the wider music world.
The Cover Art
The album artwork for The Queen is Dead was designed by the band's lead singer, Morrissey. The cover itself features Alain Delon from the 1964 film L'Insoumis.
