This listing is for a pair of Audioquest NightHawk headphones and an Audioquest Dragonfly v1.2 USB DAC.
2015 marks an exceptional leap for AudioQuest, and brings an entirely new element to their impressive catalogue. The 'NightHawk' headphones utilise the company's world-famous design prowess, and integrate new depths of headphone technology to redefine the standards of state of the art personal listening. AudioQuest have built this product to push and strain the boundaries, offering a superior headphone in an accessible price category.
The NightHawk name is derived from the design concept of offering a headphone model that 'conveys power and freedom, inspires ideas of physical and emotional transportation'. It's with this design philosophy that AudioQuest have been able to form an aesthetically unique product with unrivalled innovation and sound quality.
The earcups are constructed from a revolutionary new material, often referred to as 'Liquid Wood - genuine wood that has been combined with reclaimed plant fibre, then heated and liquefied. This allows the wood to be treated and processed in a way that allows for injection moulding. When compared to normal wood or plastic, the Liquid Wood material allows for stronger acoustic properties and an infinite number of geometric possibilities. The Liquid Wood earcups are designed to reflect and resemble the shape of a human ear, allowing in turn for a far more comfortable fit and less strain on the listener's head and ears. To top it all off, Liquid Wood is an environmentally friendly material; not only is it aesthetically pleasing - but it's also sustainable.
The NightHawk's headband is flexible and comfortable; designed to distribute the weight of the headphones evenly. The simply designed, yet highly intelligent (and patent pending) suspension system used by the headphones allows the earcups to move freely, allowing heads of practically any shape or size to make use of an thoroughly enjoy the sound of NightHawk. The ear-pads reflect this comfortability, constructed from durable protein leather and also shaped to resemble the human ear.
AudioQuest are one of the most prestigious and well-regarded cable manufacturers in the world and have been in operation for over 30 years. It's no surprise that the NightHawk cable has had an equally impressive level of care and attention put into its creation process, something many other headphone manufacturers overlook. The NightHawk's cable has been designed to truly minimize distortion and promote an intense and dynamic performance from the headphones. Many of the ingredients within the cable are shared with AQ's higher end speaker cables and interconnects, including high purity Solid Perfect-Surface Copper+ conductors, Foamed-Polyethylene insulation, Carbon-Based Noise-Dissipation System (NDS) and silver plated terminations. The soft nylon braiding allows mechanical noise to be severely dampened and retain the integrity of the signal being transferred through it.
The driver units are inspired by the drivers found in high end loudspeaker models. The NightHaw's 50mm high-excurcion drivers are comprised of bio-cellulose pistonic diaphragms and compliant rubber surrounds to offer a naturally detailed representation of space, resulting in an astounding stereo image and dynamic sound. It's semi-open back construction means that air can flow naturally. This results in a punchy midrange, detailed and crystal clear highs, all the while tempered with a deep and controlled bass.
The first version of the Dragonfly brought us a high performance DAC in the form of a USB-stick, impressing audiophiles and music lovers all over the world. Soon after however, a number of similar alternatives began sprouting up from various competitors.
As a solution, AudioQuest have decided to join the race to compete against the Dragonfly and have released their new version 1.2 model of the device. Improvements include an even more refined circuitry between the digital analogue conversion chip and the analogue output stage, this means a more precise and direct signal path is formed, which in turn drastically increases clarity and transparency from the sound being reproduced.
The power supply of the DAC has been enhanced to give the sound more 'grip' and improve on the dynamic contrast even further than before.
The appearance of the new Dragonfly is almost identical to that of it's original counterpart, with some slight difference in the analogue jack-socket appearance. New Dragonfly v1.2's are clearly marked as the new version on the packaging.
The Dragonfly v1.2 turns any laptop, PC or Mac in to a true high fidelity media source that any audiophile would be proud of. Plugging headphones (or a 3.5mm analogue interconnect) in to the Dragonfly means your computer will bypass its soundcard entirely and push all of its audio signal (although you can specify which sounds should be played through the Dragonfly and which ones should be played through the computer/laptop speakers) out through the Dragonfly and in to your headphones, amplifier, AV receiver, etc
The Dragonfly utilises highly advanced clocking methods, including it's 'asynchronous' USB audio data transfer. This reduces digital timing errors by a drastic amount to ensure that you are hearing every aspect of the sound being played through the device. It also uses two entirely separate fixed-frequency master clocks (one for 44.1kHz/88.2kHz signals and one for 48kHz/96kHz signals), locking” functions with the computer, DragonFly v1.2 employs sophisticated “asynchronous” USB audio data transfer, which dramatically reduces digital-timing errors. In addition, thanks to two completely independent fixed-frequency master clocks (one for 44.1kHz/88.2kHz signals and another for 48kHz/96kHz signals).
