To satisfy the most discerning audiophile and movie aficionado, every aspect of system design must be examined and blended in a synergetic manner. As one might expect of a Signature product, all the ingredients in the B&W Signature 8 NT are of the highest order. The system is built around an extremely strong and rigid glass-filled polymer thermoset baffle. This provides the foundation for the drive units and fits into a steel (rather than the more common plastic) wall frame, commensurate with the size and weight of the product. Two 180mm (7-inch) paper/KevlarÆ cone drivers provide well-extended and dynamic bass. Centrally placed between them is a sub-baffle, supporting the midrange and tweeter drivers. This sub-baffle may be rotated in 90 degree steps so that, no matter which way the complete system is oriented, the midrange and tweeter can always be positioned one above the other to optimise horizontal dispersion and maintain the correct balance for a widespread group of listeners especially important for centre channel applications. The midrange driver is a smaller, 130mm (5-inch) version of the FST driver found in all Nautilus 800 and Signature Series 3-way systems and exhibits the same ability to portray the finest nuances in the recorded signal. The 25mm (1-inch) aluminium dome tweeter is tube loaded, Nautilus style, to minimise delayed coloration. Like all Signature tweeters, it uses several techniques, including silver plating of the centre pole piece of the magnet, to extend the system response well into the ultrasonic region, compatible with all recording formats. Naturally, the highest quality crossover components are used, with air core inductors throughout, and the system may readily be bi-wired. Installation is completed with either the pre/post mount kit, PMK 8NT, or the custom Signature 8NT back box. In drywall construction, the back box provides increased sound insulation and protection against the spread of fire, sometimes a building regulation. In solid walls, it simplifies proper installation by defining the volume required by the bass drivers, which has to extend beyond the boundaries of the wall frame (the overall height of the back box is 1.5m (59 in)). Of substantial construction, this back box incorporates comprehensive vertical and horizontal bracing, panel damping and acoustic foam absorption.
