Opera Quinta stereo speakers

Possessing many engineering features from the higher end Opera models, the Quinta performs well above other speakers at it's price point. Coupled with beautiful construction and top quality components, this model is a wise choice for many audiophiles on a budget.

Today, Opera Loudspeakers is one of the few manufacturers that uses the sealed enclosure to load the woofer. The success and interest in our Opera Seconda model has prompted us to extend the use of a closed-box load in the new Quinta model. This new Opera Quinta, presented at the Top Audio and Video Show 2011 in Milan, is still a three-way floorstanding design, but it has been completely updated with a new cabinet structure, drivers and crossover system.

Drivers
The new 7” woofer is a custom model made by Scanspeak for the whole new
Classica series. This woofer has excellent performance in the mid-frequencies—so
much so that it can be used as a midrange. It is equipped with an aluminium
diaphragm with a 38 mm coil (two-layer, CCWA wire) with an aluminium former
immersed in a suitably shaped air gap. There is also a metal ring around the pole
piece to control the flux variations. The basket is die-cast for maximum stiffness.
Compared to its predecessor, the volume displacement is increased by a
significant 10%. The rigid aluminium diaphragm is free from sub-harmonics and
transverse modes and perfectly reproduces the lower frequencies. The two
woofers, connected in parallel, share the same 40 litre enclosed volume.
The midrange, as in the previous Quinta model, is identical to the woofer and takes
advantage of the oversized linear excursion to greatly reduce intermodulation
distortion.
The rear volume of the midrange, located in a separate closed space, is filled with
one layer of pyramidal shaped, 10 cm thick, polyurethane which forms an
extremely effective acoustic trap. As a consequence, consistency and clarity are
t h e h a l l m a r k s o f t h e s o u n d o f t h i s s p e a k e r .
The tweeter, a D26 series model made by Scanspeak, has a one inch high quality
treated soft dome, double magnet, decompression chamber, ferrofluid, aluminum
flange and a one mm. peak to peak linear excursion (twice as much as a
conventional tweeter). The frequency response extends to 30kHz (0 dB) and 40 kHz
is reproduced (-6 dB). The resonant frequency is about 860 Hz which makes this
tweeter insensitive to vibrations from other loudspeakers (due to the heavy 30 mm
MDF used on the front panel).
Crossover
The crossover uses the same cascade configuration that you can find in our top
Tebaldi and Caruso models. The circuit is divided on three different boards, which
are placed at suitable distance from each other to reduce the effects of the
mutual inductance of the coils. The high-pass sections (for tweeter and midrange)
are designed to minimize the microphonic effect (something which is rarely done).
The capacitors used in the signal path have been carefully selected. This also
contributes to the stability of the virtual central channel to create a stable and
precise soundstage.
Cabinet
The upper part of the cabinet follows the curvature of the Malibran model. On the
front panel, MDF (30 mm thick) is made wide enough to accommodate the
speaker drivers, and has rounded edges that are covered in leather which also
acts as a seal for the speaker. The sides of the cabinet are veneered with real
wood and finely polished. The structure is further stiffened by internal bracing.
Opera Quinta is equipped with strong iron bars for wheels or spikes.
The four external connectors (Quinta is designed for bi-wiring) are the traditional
gold-plated brass connectors, the same for all Opera speakers including our top
models. They accept any kind of wire termination, providing a safe and effective
electrical and mechanical contact.
The insensitivity of the closed box system to sub-sonic frequencies makes our
speakers especially suited to the reproduction of analog records (LPs). The Opera
Quinta is also suited to be used as front and/or rear channel in home theater
systems: with two pairs of Opera Quinta you can get a Home Theater System that
r e q u i r e s n o c e n t e r c h a n n e l a n d n o s u b - w o o f e r .
Particular attention has been paid to the electrical impedance curve to get an
overall reproduction of sound that is less sensitive to the quality of the cables and
amplifier (tube or solid state). Opera Quinta is a true 4 ohm nominal impedance
system that meets the DIN 45500 standards (minimum impedance greater than 3.2
ohms) that can be driven by any amplifier suited for 4 ohm nominal load.
The new Quinta Model, although part of the Classica series, makes an important
qualitative leap in the absolute quality of the reproduction and in the “value for
money” department, making it even more competitive.
Opera Quinta has a final diffuser; with full extension of the low frequency, it is
capable of reproducing large volumes of sound. It is also easy to place in a room,
with its clear and defined midrange and high frequency reproduction typical of
our top speakers.
