Totem Beak tuning device (pair)

Totem Acoustic are a loudspeaker manufacturer, based in Canada, that construct and design some of the best sounding speaker units on the market today. The company have over 25 years of compact loudspeaker design experience, and shock listeners with models like the Mite, as the sound this model is able to reproduce is vastly larger than its stature would suggest.

From a distance it looks like a bullet casing. If you've visited a Totem dealer, or seen Totem loudspeakers at a show, you've probably noticed these polished metal objects sitting atop the speakers. A set of them is included with certain speakers (for instance, the Shaman). They are available as an accessory for other models, or even for non-Totem speakers. Pick up a Beak and look underneath, and you'll see that it is partly hollow, but only partly.

That isn't all. The upper two-thirds of its surface is ridged with a series of tiny lines. None of this was left to chance. Computer simulations were carried out to predict the results with a particular shape, ridges of a particular depth and spacing, and an inner cut-out of exactly that form. The Beak was developed to control parasitic resonance's on top of the speaker cabinet, resonances that interfere with the proper lobbing action of the tweeter. The small chamber underneath actually absorbs and traps the resonance's.

As for the lines and the carefully-sculpted form, they help the integration of the stereo image, strengthening the holographic depth that are a hallmark of Totem speakers.
