Marantz CD6005 CD Player

The new Marantz CD6005 CD player follows a long line of exceptional sounding CD players from Marantz - in fact, Marantz announced the first CD player to the world back in 1982, the top loading CD63, when the company was owned by Philips, co-inventor with Sony of the Compact Disc format. Marantz has been well placed to develop world beating CD player designs ever since, thanks to it's extensive knowledge of both digital and analogue audio techniques - both are essential to a world class CD player, and a key success factor in the evolution of CD players over time.

The goal of the CD6005 is to deliver the best possible audio quality from a CD player in it's price category - What Hifi magazine have already concluded that the 6005 is indeed the best CD player available below £500 - quite an achievement. Added functionality is now found in the CD6005 to give even more audio playback options, for instance, using the USB input on the front panel, it is possible to play music files from USB stick, USB hard drive, iPod, or iPhone. A new two line fluorescent display makes the added information coming from iPhone/ iPod very convenient to read.

Inside the CD6005, separate circuit boards carry the analogue and digital signal processing circuitry - the reason is to keep the noisy digital signals well away from the delicate analogue circuits, so that the audio quality remains purer and clear. The mechanical design has also been given full attention - external vibration has been minimised by using a mechanically stable CD mechanism, which isolates the laser from any unwanted vibration, resulting in far fewer errors in the generated bit stream read from the disc. The double layered base plate improves mechanical stiffness still further, again to reduce unwanted bit stream errors, leading to clearer audio quality.

The DAC stage is a highly precise converter of the digital bit stream to stereo analogue audio as it uses the Cirrus Logic CS4398 DAC chip, as seen in some of Marantz's high end CD players. the output of the DAC is then past to twin HDAM output amplifiers which prepare the signals for the following external amplifier. The HDAM's have a very fast transient response, with very low noise and are optimised for high quality audio, aspects of design which could never be achieved by using a finalised chip implementation of the circuitry.

Like the matching PM6005 amplifier, the CD6005 features a powerful transformer and audiophile grade Nichicon reservoir capacitors and smaller Elna electrolytics for smoothing of the DC supplies.

Ease of use when the PM6005 and CD6005 are combined in a system was another important design consideration - both products come with the same infra red remote control, so that both products can be controlled by just one remote - and if the remote bus connections on each product are connected together, they can be controlled via an iPhone app or connected to other Marantz products such as AV receiver to simply control from one remote.
