The original RP3 claimed the hearts of both music enthusiasts and product critics alike, winning a vast number of awards including What Hifi? Product of the Year, Six times. To upgrade and build upon what was already a superlative, iconic turntable model was always going to be a tricky task, but following two years of vigorous research and development by Rega's team of engineers, the new Planar 3 takes the reputation of its predecessor and excels it to new standards.
The Planar 3's RB330 tonearm was designed using state-of-the-art 3D CAD and CAM technology and incorporates over three decades worth of tonearm design experience to form a truly outstanding product. A new bearing housing and Rega's latest tonearm tube are designed in such a way that the tonearm can intelligently redistribute mass and guarantee that the arm exhibits far fewer points of potential parasitic resonance. It's an extremely stable arm design, with practically zero friction-free movements from the highly precise bearing assembly. The result is a truly immersive vinyl listening experience, complete with every level of warmth and micro-dynamic detail hidden deep within the grooves of your favourite vinyl records.
The high-gloss acrylic laminated plinth is stiffer and better than before improved both aesthetically and ergonomically with the new power switch positioning. The plinth comes in three finishes; gloss black, gloss white or gloss red. The Planar 3 uses a platter/sub-platter construction with double braces, an improved 3mm phenolic bottom brace and a new metalised skin phenolic top brace. The Platter makes use of a newly developed float glass 'Optiwhite' polished rim 12mm design, which drastically improves the accuracy of the platter.
TONEARM
The RB330 tonearm was designed using the latest 3D CAD & CAM technology and is the culmination of more than 35 years of tonearm design experience. Featuring a brand-new bearing housing, our latest tonearm tube designed using intelligent redistribution of mass ensures this arm will exhibit fewer points of possible resonance. Extreme stability with almost friction-free movement from the new high-precision bearing assemblies guarantees to gather more information from your vinyl than ever before.
PLINTH
The walnut effect, laminated plinth, with an ergonomically positioned power switch. Rega has pioneered the use of lightweight rigid plinths. The clever use of a lightweight particulate core with a highly rigid phenolic resin skin became the foundation of the high level of performance achieved by the now iconic Planar range.
MOTOR
24 V low noise low voltage precision motor and PCB assembly, fitted with a custom CNC machined aluminium pulley.
CENTRAL BEARING
Rega designed a patented brass main hub central bearing, improved fit and construction reducing stress on the bearing itself.
DOUBLE BRACE TECHNOLOGY
3 mm phenolic bottom brace and metalized skin phenolic top brace. The 50th anniversary Planar 3 uses a lightweight laminated plinth strengthened using our double brace system. Mounted specifically where the increased rigidity is required (between the tonearm mounting and the main hub bearing) this forms a structurally sound “stressed beam” assembly. This rigid plinth design prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonance, which will add unnatural distortions to the music. Equally, heavier mass can transfer more unwanted energy, such as motor or bearing noise directly into the rotating record. The use of braces instead of the complete skin allows double-thickness phenolic resin in these key areas while providing further weight reduction to the plinth which directly addresses the issue of mass absorption and unwanted energy transmission.
NEO MK2 PSU
The Neo MK2 PSU is an advanced turntable power supply providing user-controllable fine speed adjustment, an advanced anti-vibration motor circuit and the convenience of electronic speed change. The Neo MK2 reduces motor noise and improves speed stability and rotational speed accuracy.
